The almost round white freshwater beads are carefully selected for their soft luster, and between several of them, I tie small knots by hand. It is an ancient beading technique that originated in China and subsequently Japan; the method has been used for generations, especially in classic beadwork. Originally, the knots were used to protect the beads so they would not rub against each other, and to prevent the entire necklace from being lost if it were to break.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-end=\"935\" data-start=\"595\"\u003eFor me, the knots are also a clear mark of quality. They give each bead its own space, make the necklace more flexible, and give it the beautiful, graceful drape that only a hand-knotted beaded necklace has.
